Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare |
This long running franchise shocked everyone when it became one of the very best online multiplayer shooters in the world. It's very strong single play campaign should not be overlooked but the compelling multiplayer built around challenges and leveling is what made this game such a hit. A great array of maps, weapons, gameplay modes and a really solid feeling that differentiates it from the more arcadey Halo 3. |

Eternal Darkness |
While not being officially a Cthulu game this is the best adaptation of Lovecraft that gaming has ever managed. Following a variety of characters throughout history as they face up against dark forces shaping the world. Featuring a sanity gauge designed to disturb the player and a really well crafted magic system for use in combat. |
Gamecube | 2002 | |
|
Fallout 3 |
Bethesda steps in to take breathe new life into the beloved post-apocalyptic franchise and surprises everyone with one of the best games ever made. An open world full of interesting stories packed with plenty of morally ambiguous choices. A game that truly fulfills the promise of sandbox gaming to allow you to make whatever you want of it. |

|
Final Fantasy VII |
Final Fantasy VII is game that made RPGs what they are in the west, making a big generational leap from the classic 2D top down games to a full 3D interactive world. Historical context aside Final Fantasy VII tells a huge story, full of real characters and is backed up by really solid RPG mechanics and whole heap of mini-games and other ways to keep things fresh the whole way through. It's overzealous fanbase have given the game a slightly tarnished reputation but this is still a truly great RPG. |

|
Half Life Series |
Gordon Freeman's mute adventures saving the Earth from interdimensional invaders redefined what we thought FPS games could do. With subtle but masterful storytelling and heart pounding set piece battles, the era of run and gun blood baths through the gates of hell was over. Valve have refined and improved their craft with each new iteration of the series, always pushing a few steps above everyone else in the field. |

Hotel Dusk: Room 215 |
A point and click DS adventure game about people and things they're looking for in their lives. All of the mysterious residents of Hotel Dusk are looking for something or someone and it's your job to get involved in everyone's secrets. A really interesting sketchy art style and functional gameplay accompany some of the best character storytelling in video gaming. |
DS | 2007 | |

Jet Set Radio Future |
JSRF is a vibrant and colourful world revolving around urban graffiti. You grind around a futuristic Tokyo taking on the street gangs and authorities for dominance. With a stunning soundtrack and high speed gameplay. |

|
Katamari Damacy |
A bizarre and psychedelic trip into the somewhat deranged mind of designer Keita Takahasi. While the story defies a concise explanation the gameplay simply asks you to do one thing: roll. Simple, elegant and an absolute joy to play. Along with hilarious dialogue and cutscenes and a wonderful soundtrack, garbage collection has never been so good. |
Playstation 2 | 2004 | |
|
Metal Gear Series |
While the length and regularity of Hideo Kojima's cutscenes has always proved controversial, the quality of the gameplay in Metal Gear has rarely been called into doubt. Often cited as popularising the stealth Genre, Metal Gear did more than just force you to hide in shadows. Over the course of the series the game has evolved to allow you to play however suits you best. On top of which the game is full of many interesting gameplay twists and equally unfathomable story twists. |
PC XBOX Playstation Playstation 2 Playstation 3 PSP |

|
Parasite Eve |
Sadly never released in the UK this a real gem in SquareSoft's back catalogue. An "action movie/RPG" hybrid giving you a shorter game (by RPG standards) but taking you along for a really exciting ride. With a really interesting contemporary storyline about a dangerous genetic outbreak in New York City and some absolutely stunning music. Forget about the inferior sequel, enjoy this forgotten masterpiece. |
Playstation | 1998 | |
|
Portal |
Brief and minimalist, Portal shows that you don't need an 8 hour epic to make a great game and that first person gaming doesn't have to be so damn serious. Working through clinically barren labs with only a deranged AI promising you cake for company soon turns into one of the funniest games of all time. This game has spawned many a tired internet meme and with good reason. This was a triumph. |
PC XBOX 360 Playstation 3 |

|
Project Zero 2: Crimon Butterfly |
Taking a more ghost story approach to survival horror than its peers Project Zero 2 creates an incredible world and atmosphere. With no weapons, just a mere camera to defend yourself this is certainly no Resident Evil. Dark, creepy and brooding a great horror game. |

|
Silent Hill 2 |
Still a high water mark for survival horror few games have even come close to achieving. Capturing an incredibly bleak mood, tense and desperate combat beside some truly horrific imagery. Where Silent Hill 2 truly shines however is its intelligent and personal story, dealing with the psychological scars of a truly damaged cast of characters. A horror game where the monsters are not as scary as the secrets the people in the game are hiding. |
