Third Strike! Like persistant lightning...

3 weeks and 3 podcasts, it's almost like we're competent. Last week we talked about multiplayer shooters, this week single player shooters. We promise we'll be talking about less testosterone driven stuff next week. But for now Perrin takes a bash at F.E.A.R. 2 and FarCry 2 while Rob brings us a look at Resistance 2 and an "accidental early review of Killzone 2".

On top of that we delve into the thorny issue of MMO server logs, the merits of Lara Croft and Rob's destructive encounter with God of War 2. All that and more, and we're not even charging!

Seth, I've ranted before

Seth, I've ranted before about people talking about Lara's tits. They have have seemed big in the 90s but they're fairly modest now, and almost every other game has something more in-your-face these days. I liked the game, stress liked, for all of the 6 levels. The combat was rubbish, absolutely rubbish, so thankfully it's sparse. The base gameplay is good, but at the same time I was let down as they were promising this would be the "first next-gen" Tomb Raider, which is a bit of a cheek because 1)it's the third on this generation and 2)it's out on the PS2. Aside from that, the base gameplay was good and the puzzles were alright, but the shortness, the poor combat, and the fact that Legend seemed more charming and new mark against it. It is worth buying, but only in a sale or for a bargain. I also sold it so I missed out on the DLC, but I might buy it if it ever goes down to single figures.

This one maybe sounded a little jmupy in the first half, but that's what you get when you're talking about 4 similar games at once so it's hardly a critism. I'm waiting for the next :)

You want us to say something controversial? Halo 3 10/10, Rob you fudging maniac/poor man.

ChampagneOLeary, I'm not

ChampagneOLeary, I'm not suggesting people are easily impressed by particularly large cgi funbags, more the point is that there are tits of some description combined with guns and thats good enough for some to merit a purchase/rate something as good. :)

I quite enjoyed the later

I quite enjoyed the later Tomb Raiders. Legend was a nice return to form and I quite enjoyed Underworld and it's DLC as well. The combat is as still the weakest part of it, but a good potion of the game is focused on the exploration and puzzle solving.

It's a nice easy going game that isn't as busy as a lot of games. I actually preferred Underworld over the new Prince of Persia, but that is more down to PoP having worse combat than Tomb Raider which is an achievement in itself.

The fact that Underworld dropped down to £20 quickly before Christmas as well made it a winner.

Now if you want to talk about shit games, take a look at the Russian-but-it-tries-to-look-japanese X-Blades. That just wants to make you cry at every turn.

Every tomb raider game since

Every tomb raider game since the original has sucked. I played the demo of the latest incarnation and all I saw was another rehash of the first with equally dated gameplay and poor combat.

But then again tomb raider games seem to be aimed at the pubescant demographic that is impressed with cgi tits and poorly modelled guns.
