2x11 - Silent Hill 2 is better than most of your favourite games!

Silent Hill Shattered Memories hits UK stores next month and as big fans of the series Rob and I took this as chance to get all emotional about our fanboy love for the series. The start of the year proves slow for our news segment, and I finally start touching on some adventure games I love in 60 seconds of fame. You'll also be very glad to hear Jim's segment is now a regular feature.

Reader's Question "What franchise reinvention/remake/revival have you liked the most?"

Silent Hill The Film was on

Silent Hill The Film was on telly recently. I watched it. Fuck me. Terrible.
I've still never played the game. Now I have no desire to. Have that, franchise.

Willziak beat me, but I'll

Willziak beat me, but I'll say anyway....

Favourite franchise reinvention for me is Metroid Prime, especially after the series absence from the previous console generation.

I thought it moved to 3D while maintaining the atmosphere, structure and style of a metroid game perfectly.

Never quite kept it up with the two sequels though...

...also, sonic's clearwank cannot continue the way it has, it's a fucking mess. Fun to record but! :p

shut it Also, aye. Let's put

shut it

Also, aye. Let's put SCW to bed. Forever. Guesting on each other's shows has worked far better.

Bagsy Fahey, cunts.

You're welcome to him! I

You're welcome to him!

I notice you guys jump to abolish SCW when it's your turn to edit the fucker! But yeah two episodes of SCW was probably enough. You shites need to come down to London so we can have you on Stage Clear we don't do all this Skype malarky!

The general plan is to both

The general plan is to both come down around Eurogamer/halloween time (assuming it's running/on a similar date this year). I'm hoping to make it a full week as well, none of this 2 days travel for 2 days London nonsense.

So Stage Clear feat. Those GW Pricks could be a halloween spesh? :D

Wonder who'll be first to invite Brake for Frogger or World's Wildest Dudes on. Fucking won't be us!

Gamewank_Jim

To be honest Tom and I are a bit busy sorting out our own podcast to be worrying about going on others. I'd certainly just get in the way if I was ever on Gamewank because Jim and Ric have really good banter. Rob also called me a stupid cunt in one episode of Stage Clear so I don't think I'd be too popular there either. :-)

Saying that though, wouldn't a conference call type cast with one member of each team make sense around about E3 or possibly just after?

Might as well actually

Might as well actually contribute to the topic in hand instead of pushing my own podcast... :-)

Not sure if it counts as a remake/reinvention but I always thought Capcom did a really good job with Street Fighter 4 last year. They've obviously remembered getting burned when trying to make it 3D all those years ago so they didn't attempt anything vastly off the wall with it. They stuck within the realms of what we know and love Street Fighter, given it a brand new art style and made a really good 2D beat em up, something which you didn't think anybody would care about in 2009.

As far as future remakes go I'm liking the rumour of Starbreeze doing a new Syndicate game.

Oh yes, "What franchise

Oh yes, "What franchise reinvention/remake/revival have you liked the most?".

I can't think of one that I like, at the moment... but here is one that I'm surprised by:
Amplitude/Frequency/Guitar Hero/DJ Hero

In the interest of full disclosure, I love both Amplitude and Frequency, not so keen on Guitar Hero and its variants.

We've seen rhythm games for years, games like Beat Mania, DDR, Parappa the Rapper et. al the appeal of these games has always been there, but the audience was usually somewhat limited. We saw the arrival of Amplitude and Frequency (which I loved) and it looked like they were just going to disappear into obscurity.

Then years on, they came out with Guitar Hero... and it's exploded into mainstream popularity. Why? Why this one and none of the predecessors? The use of recognisable songs? Does the addition of a peripheral tap into that inner-teenager in all of us and allow us turn the air-guitar experience into a tangible and goal-oriented one?

Maybe it's simply the case of leaving electronica behind in favour of rock? The relative lack of buzz around DJ Hero seems to suggest that this might well be the case.

Either way, the sudden boom totally took me by surprise, it wasn't even that much of a change in format.

Current rhythm game recommendation : Rhythm Heaven on the DS.

I enjoyed the Silent Hill

I enjoyed the Silent Hill summaries :) Brings back the memories... A giant pyramid sat on top of the fridge... My brother and his mate being scared witless when they were "trapped" in an elevator with a girl dressed as a Silent Hill nurse... Good times, good times.

I haven't tried any of the games past SH4, after that, I must admit that I became a little tired of the franchise. I didn't know that there's going to be a new SH game on the Wii, and the enthusiasm with which you discuss it is making me giddy with excitement at the prospect. I always thought that the Wii had real potential for a more immersive gaming experience, and it's the perfect vehicle for a survival horror. I'm also liking the idea that rather than the player controlling the game, it's the game that's reading you.

By the way, Punchline and Love-de-Lic aren't ARG developers, the aforementioned Chulip is actually a PS2 game. Also, here is a nice review for Love-del-Lic's Dreamcast game "Lack of Love" :

I just want to say thanks for

I just want to say thanks for the plug and to state my disbelief in a public forum that Rob Fahey completely missed a Beatles reference.

WildestSonicsClearWankBrake anybody?

I'm joking of course.

The Beatles are so close to

The Beatles are so close to the absolute dead-centre of my "meh" space that you could calibrate the very concept of indifference according to them. They do pretty much nothing for me, so missing a reference to them is entirely likely!

More of a Rolling Stones guy

More of a Rolling Stones guy then Rob?

Surely it would be Brake

Surely it would be Brake Clear for Sonics Wildest Wank.

I'm joking of course.

Maybe we should just join up

Maybe we should just join up with Eurogamer and have our own three way podcast going on?

Wildest Euro Brake?

I'm joking of course.

But if you ALL appear in one

But if you ALL appear in one big postcast, who does that leave to listen to it?

Damn, the man has a point.

Hey guys, long time listener,

Hey guys, long time listener, first time caller. Thanks a bunch for the free advertising peeps (this may even bump our listenership into the double figures) and to answer your question Rob, we are both more than qualified to use our 'title' with a long list of credentials that i will happily share with you all if we ever get invited to do Sonics Wildest clear Wank. I'm sure that the sound of nine voices conversing over skype would provide an insightful and coherant listening experience. Love the show by the way.

I figure at this point if

I figure at this point if SonicsClearWank were to continue it would have to be some kind of summit where each shows sends one representative. We'll see.

Hey, I was joking of course of course!

Which revived franchise have I liked the most?

Well, I think Metroid Prime was an amazing step up to 3D, although it was hardly a dead series. But it felt like a 3D remake of Super Metroid. I also loved, the Monkey Island special edition. Luckily I'd forgotten about 50% of the puzzles, so it was not too easy. I've also loved the new Sam and Max games as well of the Tales of Monkey Island series.

They need to keep re-making point and clicks. I might even give the CSI titles a go seeing as telltale are behind them... maybe not.

Although it's easily

Although it's easily forgotten, a little thing called Metal Gear Solid had an ancestor. I only played the NES game briefly, but I did read the Nintendo Worlds of Power novel based on it when I was 9 and concluded that it was the best book ever written. I bought it again a few months ago, it barely qualifies as a Book Written in English.

sonic heroes was 1 of the
