Second Impact! We're back...

We're back again, for a second week of the Stage Clear podcast. I'd say "by popular demand" but I think "by sheer stubbornness" is more accurate. Things went a lot better this week, we've kept it down to about 45 minutes, audio quality is a lot clearer and we've broken it up into what we hope are some interesting segments.

The main topic of the week is multiplayer games, primarily shooters and the like. So we ramble on about Call of Duty, Halo, Left 4 Dead while Rob tries to convince the world of the importance of server browsers.

As usual your feedback is everything. Let us know what you think as we try to evolve this podcast into something we hope is as much fun for you to listen to as it is for us to make.

I've added in some musical breaks between segments, I've lifted these from firebrandboy at the 8bitcollective. They're were rather nicely available under creative commons and so is this podcast.

You're right about the server

You're right about the server browser. When I played TF2 on the PC I struggled a little with it, but you expect that sort of thing. I'm shocked you get the same thing on Live. The few games I have played on there (CoD4, Halo 3, Dead or Alive 4 for 5 minutes) have maybe spoiled me. You're also right about the different modes - after dying five hundred times in succession in CoD4, I go for some classic deathmatch and it feels like a different universe.

Good mention of The Darkness because it's the game I thought of as soon as you mentioned the topic...

The 'cast didn't feel like an hour long (probably because it wasn't, but you know what I mean) - time flies when you're having fun?! I liked your (Don't) Play This Game feature, even 2 minutes is a little generous - crack down! Bollocks of the Week is an inspired name, and I liked the discussion. I think you trailed off a bit at the end though, you covered the issue but maybe some more vitriol was required, a final judgement perhaps?

Thank you for the pop screens!

Hey there - thanks for the

Hey there - thanks for the comments :) Glad to see I'm not a lone ranting madman on the topic of server browsers and the likes. Perrin likes to make me feel that way for his own sadistic amusement, of course.

We've cut the (Don't) Play This Game feature to two minutes this time around, and I think you're right - one minute might be more like it. I was making up extra stuff to say around the 30 second mark, so it's obviously not enough pressure!

The most fun I had in

The most fun I had in Left4Dead is when you get together 8 friends (which is a damn silly feat in the first place) and then have Survivors vs. Infected and making sure you are all in an Xbox Party. The screams, the cursing and making munching sounds while killing someone is far too much fun.

Mulitplayer games can be really hit and miss at the best of times, mainly as if you find one you really enjoy you will latch on to it and dabble in something else briefly until the point where you've burnt yourself out your favourite. As you said with COD4, great multiplayer and couldn't stop play. But with COD5, I didn't want to be doing the same thing over again, was just not interested in the slightest.

Yet the funny thing is, one guy we have in our office who is not a regular gamer and picks up maybe 1 or 2 games every three months, swears by COD completely rinsed COD4 until he hit the top level and is doing the same with COD5. He'll happily talk about boozing and football, but start on COD5 and he'll say that if he has nothing to do on a weekend he'll do a complete lap of the and get another Prestige level. Then he'll lapse back into boozing and football again.

Isn't it weird how people who

Isn't it weird how people who otherwise consider themselves "non-gamers" get so utterly obsessed with games in this way? It's always incredibly narrow - they find one game that they get completely hooked on, but the very suggestion that they might want to try out some other games too gets treated with "oh no, it's not like I'm a *gamer*!" derision.

(Yeah yeah, "humans are weird", news at 11... I just think it's an interesting facet of the occasionally uncomfortable relationship the "mainstream" market has with videogames right now :) )
