2x13 - This is a story all about how my life got flipped turned upside down...

Been wanting to do an episode on video game storytelling since we started the show and this is it. We go through the history of storytelling in games from Planetfall to Heavy Rain looking at the effectiveness of different techniques along the way. If you're one of those people who says "If I wanted story I'd go watch a movie" then pay attention as we set you right.

Only two more episodes to go this season and they're both going to be special. A live show in 2 weeks and a grand finale a month later that if all goes well should feature two awesome special guests.

So the Halo story is just as

So the Halo story is just as good as the one in Mass Effect. Hmmmmm. Bollocks. Both universes are simmiler, but halo has these boring characters and no real subtlety, ME is a sprawling intricate soap opera!

Great show BTW, Looking at the comments, I have to say...

Good point Mentazm,
Good point Jim,
Good point Perrin.

I don't take sides. I just play games!

But Rob, The Halo love is a bit much eh?

I think our point was they

I think our point was they both have very interesting universes that extend beyond the games, rather than saying Halo specifically has a better story because the story in Halo is a bit ropey.

If you follow some of the expanded elements of the Halo universe you'll see the story is a hell of a lot more interesting than just master chief blowing up Halos. SPOILERS!

Also while I'd agree that Mass Effect's universe is more sprawling than Halos since they have more races to pick from, subtle it is not. They paint entire races with huge brush strokes, and only when they have to deal with characters from those races that join your team do they give them a bit more rounded characterisation. Essentially it's the Star Trek system where everyone in a given race is exactly the same, until they're a good guy and then suddenly they're allowed more emotions.

Video is excellent and yes the auto subtitler is pure fucking gold. It's so completely broken I don't know why it's there.

I'm a bit worried about

I'm a bit worried about socialising with Rob and Perrin because they'll probably realise how much they don't like us as people, or concepts. It always gives the game away.

That was a fun episode

That was a fun episode again.

I completed Final Fantasy 13, and god, as much as I liked the battle system and the story telling in the beginning, the last two chapters get so so cheesy, and the final movie sequence made no sense until I read up on it.

They made a terrible mistake with story telling in that game in that they don't explain much in the lengthy movies, and requires you to read the text summary in the menu.

Rather unkind about Penny

Rather unkind about Penny Arcade, not entirely valid I feel but there you go.

Feel free to present a

Feel free to present a counter argument. I'm still a big fan of their comics but I feel they're journalists biased by cash in a way that would be unethical for any other publication. But this is excused because people love them so much.

Their stance on games journalism has not sat well with me for a while now but I used them canceling their game just as a lead-in to talking about it. With only a few episodes left seems a perfect time to burn our remaining bridges. ^_^

I felt I had to say

I felt I had to say something. They got in the neck by accident in the previous episode when you mentioned the AC2 thing and there was a bit of miscommunication between you and Rob. I have to confess bias in that I too liked the first Creed game. Aside from the questionable AC matter, I think they're well intentioned and think they're pretty good ambassadors for gaming. They make a shitload of money from dicking around which is infuriating, their comic only occassionally raises a slight smile, but I enjoy Tycho's approach and would rather have his emotions about a game than a professional review. Gabe was the one who defended AC and I feel he comes across as more naive than mercenary. Maybe I was just shocked by the hostility because I think of them as mostly harmless.

Flotilla is a great game,

Flotilla is a great game, chhers for the heads up. Not so big on the combat but the humour and overall presentation is ace. Pity it's so short though...

I have created a Stage Clear drinking game.

Everytime Perrin says Indie have a shot of whisky, everytime Rob mentions Japan have a sake, everytime you both moan about gamers gargle some spunk. Swallowing optional.

How about every time you

How about every time you mention "dubstep" or pretend to have better taste than everyone else, your cunt gets kicked in? :)

Are you implying a man who

Are you implying a man who makes indie games talks about indie games a lot and a man who studies Japanese talks about Japan a lot?

P.S. Gamers suck!

Let it be known that on this day, the 2nd of April 2010, Rob Fahey agreed with something I said and as a result did not call me a cunt.
