Stage Clear Vth Vanguard! Freebies ahoy!

In our effort to find a more whimsical topic we've decided to cover online Flash games. There's some really interesting stuff out there in terms of quality and a variety and we give a run down of some of Perrin's favourites while Rob voices is his disapproval and appropriate intervals. Included below (under the read more link) is a full list of the games we covered if you want to try them out for yourself.

I'd tell you what we cover in Bollocks of the Week and You Should(n't) Play this but I think that would ruin the surprise.

Also for next week's show we want you to let us know your answer to the following: "If you could adapt any horror film or series into a game, what would it be and how would you make it work as a game?". Answers in the comments thread or via our contact form and we'll discuss it in next week's show.

Saw Using an engine similar

Saw

Using an engine similar to the Sims games, you creep into a house full of sleeping people and abduct your victim. Then using context sensitive inputs you can construct your own complex puzzle-like scenario for said victim in a location of your choosing throughout a suburban neighbourhood.

Points are awarded based on the following:

Length of time the victims last before eventually copping it.
State of mind of the victims, more terror and self-mutilation is better than a quick lucid death.
Number of victims you can dispatch before the police eventually track you down.

You can't retry, or test your contraptions without getting more victims. The more victims you abduct, the more likely the police will be on your trail. If you're surprised by the police, you flee the scene, lose points and have to abandon the trap. If you've already moved on from said trap and the police discover it, then you don't lose any points.

Not exactly going to be scary but fun none the less :D

This is not a game about a

This is not a game about a horror movie, but more about horror movies and their cliches in general.

I made a few notes, and I'll try to explain it as best I can.

The (cheesy) premise is that in the far future, people are bored of scripted movies, and instead are more interested in real death and destruction akin to bloodsports.

Following this, you, as a movie director, have invented a machine to allow you to travel through or pause time.

Using this, you have travelled to the 20th century in order to re-enact horror cliches with real people. BUT you must remember that the people aren't scripted, so you must attempt to get them to act in certain ways.

Gameplay is a sort of Ghost Master meets Incredible Machine, where you would set up an area for humans to enter, only for horror-movie things to happen to them. You obviously want the game to be as scary as possible, and certain things give more points by the end, such as:

1. Frightened people/Tension
2. Blood/Gore

Level ideas:
* A teenager at a dorm party is angry after being turned down by a girl. Therefore in classic movie style becomes a slasher-killer that night. The player must set up the house to allow the killer to take his revenge
Obstacles -
If multiple people are together upon meeting the killer, they will gang up and kill him. You must keep them split up into groups of 2 or less.
You must prevent the dorm inhabitants from escaping, either by positioning things in the house, or giving the killer methods to prevent their exit.
You must stop the dorm inhabitants from getting outside help.

*You must both convince a group of teenagers to explore a haunted house, by making it eerie and interesting, then while they are there kill them off in a series of coincidental "accidents" a-la Final Destination.
Obstacles -
Humans with a high "perception" score may notice certain traps set by the player and foil them or avoid them (and point them out to others)

A vast land of green endless

A vast land of green endless wonder spreads out before every creature in the land, or at least it did until the machinations of a vile sorceress cast upon that world a gelatinous mass that ebbed and flowed arcoss the plains. It's stinking blistering presence inching across any good pure part of the world. Hooves beat fast and hard as our heroes try to find salvation, find defence, find hope against the ever encrouching slow but steady march OF THE SMOOZE!

I'd like to see a good

I'd like to see a good Frankenstein-esque game. The cliches and parodies have made the concept seem corny over time, but a guy who assembles pieces of dead bodies to make life? You've got touches of Trauma Centre in assembling the biology, but it's not as simple as that, you've also got to get the pieces from somewhere. But how to murder people? A game of setting up traps to harvest people invited to your home? Stealthy trips out in night to pick up victims? Breaking into prisons and borrowing limbs from someone who doesn't deserve them? Then once you're finished the ungrateful sod asks you to make him a wife... At worst, It'll resemble 'The Man With Two Brains' which can't be a bad thing.

I've only seen the first two Saw movies, but one could manage a Wario Ware style game, over 200 different traps... Saw off that foot! Crack open that skull! Rummage through those syringes!

I'd like to apologise for my

I'd like to apologise for my incoherent nonsense. Firstly let me confirm that Street Fighter IV DLC is horrible money grabbing behaviour that I bought as an impulse and regretted. It was the first time I had bought a ripoff piece of DLC and I hope it will be the last.

It's bad practice, but the greater evil was things like TR:Underworld and the strong allegations that levels were held back from the original development specifically for DLC, the game feeling so short makes it easy to believe. TR:Underworld and Wipeout Pulse (charging a lot for extra ships that came free with Wipeout Pure) are examples where the precense of DLC creeps into your game experience - playing Wipeout Pulse I had this creeping feeling that I was missing out by not having the DLC. I don't think many people will think they're missing out on the Street Fighter costumes, and as such the integrity of the core game is preserved.

There's no way that charging money for the SFIV DLC is defensible (never mind the fact that the content isn't evn downloaded!), but at least it's safely ignorable and doesn't hurt anyone who doesn't choose to buy it. People will protest against things like TR:Underworld because they feel ripped off when they buy the main game, but there will be less argument against things like the Street Fighter costumes because you only get ripped off once you buy the costumes.

In summary, I knew I was being an idiot. In an ideal world none of the above would happen, I last post was a pessimistic one, thinking that all the big titles are going to be doing what they can to wring money out of us by charging for content that should have been included in the game. I can only hope that won't happen and I won't be buying any more silly DLC like this and vote with my wallet. I imagine it'll always remain profitable for them though, so will they stop?

-Right, horror movies... Jacob's Ladder really freaked me out but then came to life in Silent Hill. I'd settle for a good Evil Dead game too, but that seems to be impossible. My knowledge of horror doesn't go very far, I think there's other games crying out to be made (Mad Max), but surely Peter Jackson's Brain Dead could see some action. I don't think I've seen a lawnmower used in a game yet.

Evil Dead and Lawnmower Man

Evil Dead and Lawnmower Man have both already been made into rubbish games. But really what we'd like to know is how you think they could be turned into a good game? What type of game would it be, how would it work?

Is it cheating if I suggest

Is it cheating if I suggest that a sequel to the Dead Space movie be made, and that it be made exactly like Dead Space?

It doesn't matter if it's

It doesn't matter if it's cheating as it's too boring a response for the show. ^_^
