Stage Clear 6: Return of the Undead Game Geeks from Zombie Hell!
This week we focus on the wonderful world of horror games, talking about the hallmarks and variety of this pseudo-genre and dig into some recent releases including Resident Evil 5, Silent Hill: Homecoming and House of the Dead: OVERKILL. In bollocks of the week Rob makes some possibly inappropriate comments that might get us into trouble and there's a whole lot more fun in these 45 minutes of silliness.

We mention the amazing A Life Well Wasted in this week's podcast. Pretty much the best gaming podcast out there, better than ours or anyone else's too. It's worthy stuff you should be listening to.
Reader's question for next week: If you could go inside one game, as it if was real, which game and why? Answers in the comments thread below. Come on, give us your best shot!

Game of choice would be Grand
Game of choice would be Grand Theft Auto, no one of them in particular. I aint really a fan of the series but the idea of strolling out of hospital the next day regardless of how severe an accident you were in sounds pretty appealing to me. As does the fact regardless how many people you kill and sheer anarchy you cause you still manage to moonwalk out of prison.
Imagine how intelligent you would be if you were in the game, hell you could just jump into a tank and be able to drive it in the blink of an eye, the same applies to helicopters, planes etc.
You also get paid for doing bad things, run someone over...20 quid richer!
______
Great show so far.
My game of choice would have
My game of choice would have to be Mafia.
I know I'd probably get bored of driving really slow cars, and struggle to hit the broad side of a barn with the guns, but getting to know all the characters and being in a 30's city would be ace for me :D
I would like to insert myself
I would like to insert myself into a Leisure Suit Larry game, so I could get me knob sucked.
Wouldn't you get beaten up by
Wouldn't you get beaten up by hookers and generally abused for ages before finally working out the right steps required to get your knob sucked, though?
(Actually, maybe that's what you had in mind anyway...)
The resident evil storyline,
The resident evil storyline, however outlandish isn't hard to fathom if you've played through the other ones tbh. Did you read all the files or listen? ;p I'll agree on MGS though, I finished MGS2 having no idea what was going on.
As to the run and gun thing everyone seems to bitch about obviously hasn't tried to shoot at anything while moving. Its fucking impossible. Yes it works in gears of war etc but despite growing more ridiculously unrealistic [i.e physics defying finishing moves etc] after code: veronica, resi has always maintained a level of realism with firearms because alot of the designers are gun nuts.
I'm not sure what the critics of resi 5 were expecting from it tbh. 4 was revolutionary because it was completely different to the previous ones story and gameplay wise [good thing for some, not so for others]. How could 5 possibly measure up? A rap off against pelicans in a parappa style bishi bashi contest? Set it in space with strange moon-physics?
Yes the single player is fairly dull and easy but its pretty clear this game is completely intended to be played with a friend. Thats the whole theme of the game 'partner'
As much as you may lol I think re5 blasts 4 into the ground on the basis that as well as having the good gameplay of 4, it tied the *storyline* in with the entire series and featured some of the classic and clearly better designed enemies. The only thing Capcom needs to do is try and add more horror elements back in because I'm pretty sure people want to be scared by these games again.
I've heard pretty much every SH fan bash RE but never a RE fan bash SH. Pretentious bastards!
Also surprise surprise, rob is an expert on 17 year-old boys ;)
I enjoy Resident Evil 5 but
I enjoy Resident Evil 5 but it's pale in comparison to 4. 4 was epic and the loss of Shinji Mikami is clearly felt. The set pieces are never quite as impressive as they were in 4 and some of the puzzles really hark back to the bad old days of Resi, the whole thing in the temple pissing about with staircases is just poor.
As for the SH vs RE fanboys I think that might be because if you're an RE fanboy it means you're only looking for "cool" characters and some zombie action, and are not particularly worried about good story or gameplay. I think RE fanboys never register on my radar because they're kind of people you could dangle a shiny coin in front of them and it would keep them happy.
Finally I can only say it so many time buy the Resident Evil story is utter utter bollocks, constantly rewritten and retconned by subsequent and disparate game directors who weren't as fussed about the story as the fanboys seem to be.
how shiny a coin are we
how shiny a coin are we talking about here?
My FPS skills WILL be useful
My FPS skills WILL be useful when the war comes... just need some muscles to hold the gun to begin with.
Also, i prefered it when you didn't prepare your comments for "You should/should not play" D: The improvisble insults and such are so much funnier.
I agree, the improvised
I agree, the improvised 'should/not play' segment was better. You should choose each-others game and they have to talk about it on the spot. The prepared comments aren't particularly easy to follow when you're trying to squeeze it all into the time limit and the humour is definitely lost.
You know each-other well enough to be able to choose games that you know would provoke a strong opinion. One way or the other. Think about your choice beforehand, but don't mention your choice to the other till you're 'on air'. Lets instil some fear into this podcast :)
reader answer: if I could get
reader answer:
if I could get out again without dying, I'd want to visit the castle in ICO. I always think about it when I visit real castles (MY EXCITING WELSH LIFE!), and they can never compare, just once I'd like to visit the real (fake) thing. SOTC would be a second choice, but you can find real landscapes that are equally imposing, whereas the ICO castle is unique, and also not full of 400 foot stone monsters that want to stomp you.
Holodeck game: Pokemon, I
Holodeck game:
Pokemon, I know that's a silly one to pick and is hardly a cutting edge piece of story telling but the idea of actually having a ruck with giant monsters at hand is quite fun. What would be even better is pointing out to the inhabitants that while they very much so are enjoying their burgers, I dont see any cows around here do you?
Shit fan pole Addition:
Sonic the hedgehog fans. All you fuckers have ruined 'blue hedgehog bounces on some robots' for me with your giant piles of pornography and strange fixation on pallette swapped rodents. Shadow is NOT cool and original and at the very least should have the curtorsy to stay fucking dead. There are a shit ton of new characters in every game if only, it's begining to seem, so that fans can add extra characters to their 580 chapter porno fanfictions.
And it cant just be me that thinks 'Cream the Rabbit' sounds less like a new addition to the vastly crowded pile of new mascots for their flag ship character and more of a masturbation euphanism.
